Attention - John Howard and co - Stop wasting my taxes on party political advertising
The amount of taxpayers money wasted on blatant party political advertising by the Government is way beyond a joke. The most recent example, the IR reforms, despite the High Court declining to rule it illegal, is still blatantly party political. The Libs are really going to town using public funds to pay for their own advertising - $20m on IR reforms (and that is not telling us how they work, it is just aimed at massaging public opinion).
All governments are guilty of using taxes for political advertising, but John Howard and team over the last few years have absolutely gone for broke with it. A large part of what we see should be billed straight to Liberal Party HQ. I don’t mind educational advertising from government agencies telling me how to access services, or reminding me of my obligations, but advertising to modify opinions is absolutely political and should not be paid for out of our taxes.
While I’m on my soapbox about this, I’d also like to see the end of public funding of elections, where we pay the parties to cover the costs of their election campaigns. This is just a rort - never will be changed though, all sides of politics have their snouts well and truly in this trough.
