David Hicks

4 Corners tonight had a story about David Hicks, the Australian Al-Quaeda fighter held by the US at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Among other things the program covered allegations of torture and rape at the hands of American interrogators.

I’m sure that Hicks was very misguided and possibly very dangerous. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for him. But, he does deserve a fair trial, not the travesty he is likely to get via the “military commission” in the US. Our Government should stand up to the Americans, like most other countries have, and insist on a proper trial governed by the rules of law for Hicks. Instead, we roll over and continue to receive pats on the head from them.

  1. One Response to “David Hicks”

  2. He was stupid but that doesn’t make him a terrorist. The Americans are looking to make an example of someone and the weak knees Howard government is fully willing to let it happen to him. The question is how long are the tax payers of Australia going to be required to keep him in jail after the Americans hand out what they see as fair? Ten years, 20, rest of his life?
