Australian to be hanged in Singapore

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 21st, 2005

Melbourne man, Nguyen Tuong Van, looks set to be hanged in Singapore in the near future, for heroin trafficking, having been busted at Changi airport in 2002 with 386g of heroin on him.

Tough shit! Choose to break the laws of foreign countries, take the punishment their laws specify! (Also, anyone taking drugs through Singapore deserves to be executed for stupidity …after all, who doesn’t know what the consequences are if caught?)

Interesting to note that plenty of governmental representations have been made for clemency, but there hasn’t been a lot of public outcry/outrage about this case. Why is this? Let me speculate:

  1. not a white Australian
  2. not an “attractive” young woman.

Well said Barry Jones

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 17th, 2005

The Age today has a piece about an article by Barry Jones, the ALP’s national president and former Federal minister. Jones makes some excellent points about the policy vacuum that Labor is, and its takeover by party apparatchiks. Not unlike my own thoughts on the subject.

Away for a few days

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 17th, 2005

I’m going away for a few days, to the Blue Mountains. I’ll be doing a bit of walking in the bush and taking lots of photos, and generally relaxing for the rest of my week off work.

Interesting point yesterday - why was it no problem at all to jump out of bed at 6.30 when normally on workdays I struggle to drag myself out of bed an hour later than that?

Fat Kids

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 17th, 2005

Interesting episode of 4 Corners tonight, about obesity in children.

Something like 30% of Australian children are overweight or obese, which has devastating health consequences down the track when they get older. Our levels of childhood obesity are 2nd only to the USA.

Several angles were explored in the program. Essentially it comes down to eating too much of the wrong foods and not enough exercise. The food industry was washing its hands of the problem, as was Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott. I think they are right to a large degree, that despite the food choices available, at the end of the day, no one is forced to eat junk, and parents should exercise the choice over what their kids eat. Having said this, some assistance in removing temptations could be useful, for example, removing or severely limiting junk food advertising during childrens’ programs, banning the advertising of toys in conjunction with food products, etc.

The other thing, and I think the larger part of the problem, is children not doing enough exercise, and leading too sedentary a life. Too much TV, Playstation, computer etc. Get them out in the park kicking the footy, playing cricket and other games. This of course requires efforts in making our parks clean and safe - deal with the drug users who hang out in some of them, and other assorted weirdos, and make them comfortable for the “normal” people to use.

The secret to fixing obesity - eat less, do more exercise! (although my wife doesn’t appreciate it when I tell her thats all it takes to lose weight).

Princess Mary’s new kid

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 17th, 2005

Here he is. Cute, eh!

Actually, its the present from the state of Tasmania to Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. A pair of Tasmanian Devils.

I don’t know why royal families and their goings on attract the attention they do. Why are royal families royal? Generally its because their ancestors were better murderers and thieves than other families. I fail to see why monarchies are relevant in today’s world … they are an anachronism and relic of the past.

Having said that, the Danes do appear to be fairly reasonable for royals. Not like the disfunctional clowns in Britain.

Went to the movies today

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 16th, 2005

I’m having this week off work, so went to the movies today and saw “The 40 Year Old Virgin“, which was the best of what was on this morning that I hadn’t already seen.

I’d never heard of Steve Carrell, so wasn’t sure what to expect. Anyway, it was quite a decent movie, with plenty of funny bits without being too crass.

Kill off the telemarketers

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 16th, 2005

It seems, about bloody time too, that some legislative action is to be taken to control telemarketing. Death to them all, I say! Absolutely pisses me off to be rung up by people trying to sell me stuff I neither need or want. Marketers - if I want to buy something I’ll go looking for it myself.

I can’t imagine cold calling people over the phone is hugely successful ….obviously the success rate is good enough for advertisers to persist with it.

Mt Stromlo - getting on for 3 years after the fire

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 16th, 2005

Mt Stromlo observatory has been a Canberra icon for many years, but was largely destroyed in the Jan 2003 fires, taking with it several million dollars worth of scientific equipment.

Went up there today for the first time since and it still looks very much trashed. Except for some new admin type buildings, everything else was pretty much a burnt out shell. Its quite strange driving up the hill, and seeing for miles in every direction, rather than the drive through the bush it used to be.

Superseries Cricket Test

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on October 15th, 2005

As I write this, its the 3rd day of the Australia vs World XI supertest. Australia’s had a bit of a batting collapse in its 2nd innings, but is still about 350 runs up. I reckon the game will be all over tomorrow, and Australia will end up winning quite convincingly - Shane Warne and Stuart McGill will go through the World XI batsmen in reasonably quick time.

But, who really cares about this match, and also the one dayers from the last week and a bit. After its hiccup against England, Australia seems to have returned to some form (although still not entirely convincing), and the World XI has just not performed up to their reputations, nor gelled as a team.

Actually, I think this summer’s whole cricket program is looking pretty dull. First up the West Indies, who are mediocre at best and in a state of turmoil ….amazing if we don’t beat them 3-0. Then South Africa, who I think are also quite mediocre, and have shown themselves to be mentally very weak when facing Australia. None of their younger players to my mind has really stepped up to Test cricket against decent opposition - I’m not counting the farces played against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh here (any decent grade team in Australia would stand a very good chance of winning tests against them).

Oh yeah, watching Murali today, I still don’t believe what he does is truly bowling …however the ICC has bent itself into multiple contortions to change the rules to legalise his action, so whatever his achievements they will count …but always subject to a big question mark!

Update: 17 Oct 2005: All over midway through Day 4 and Australia won by 210 odd runs.
