Ban smoking in cars

There was some discussion in the press today about a private member’s bill in NSW proposing a ban on smoking in cars. NSW Health Minister John Hatzistergos said the government supports a ban on smoking in cars containing children and said it will look at the issue.

Personally I think anything that gives smokers a hard time is good …. dirty filthy habit!

However, there is merit in banning smoking in cars. Apart from the risk it poses to children in the car, it also must be as distracting as using a mobile phone (banned), not to mention the amount of cigarette butts that dickhead smokers just chuck out the window (why not use the fucking ashtray?), and the number of fires started by idiots who do this. However, its going to be hard to enforce in practice, and I suspect its a waste of time as many of the bogans who smoke with their kids in the car are going to have tinted windows and the like to prevent easy detection.

Nice idea, but I feel that police resources would be better employed doing many more useful things.

  2. I agree it’s probably a good idea. You’re right when you say it will be difficult to enforce, but then, a lot of road rules are.

I mean, what % of speeding drivers actually get caught?
