Natasha faces up to the inevitable

Australian Democrats senator Natasha Stott Despoja is apparently considering not standing for re-election in 2007. Likewise her colleague Andrew Murray. To my mind this is just acceptance of the inevitability of defeat which they will certainly experience were they to stand for election.
The Australian Democrats lost 3 of their 7 Senate seats at the last Federal election and will struggle to retain any at the next election. They also performed very poorly at the South Australian state election last weekend, and look to have lost 2 of their 3 MP’s there. They are very rapidly vanishing from Australian politics … pretty much inevitable as they degenerated into a rabble (certainly Federally) over the past few years. Whatever useful function they may have once performed has passed them by for good, which is a bit of a pity, as the need for a sensible moderating force on the government’s wilder legislative fantasies is as great as ever.

Perhaps she will turn a pale shade of green?

I’d like to see both of them either join the greens or run as independents. They both have some value to add to the political discourse.

I think Andrew Murray is an excellent senator, and so will be a loss to federal parliament.

Such a pity that an articulate and passionate politician feels it’s hopeless casting their pearls before the swiny voters.
Today the SMH suggest Peter Garrett is PM material.
Integrity, stature, and sincerity have been lacking for quite a while so here’s hoping.
I was appalled when he changed Party, but he (Natasha or Julia) would be less embarrassing as a Leader than The Lyin King.
