Song lyrics

Posted by Ian in Uncategorized on April 11th, 2006

I was listening to some music today, and liked these lyrics:

two sips from the cup of human kindness
and im shit faced, just laid to waste

“Use it”, The New Pornographers, from “Twin Cinema”, 2005.

This got me to thinking of other songs which I think have pretty special lyrics. A couple more that come to mind are:

Sometimes you can say more, in a drunken hour or so
Than some people get across, in a life of lying low.

“For a Short Time”, Weddings, Parties, Anything, from “They Were Better Live”, 1999

and this:

You’re a man in a cage
I see you everyday
You’re the one who has everything
….
And you think you’re happy, better than the rest
But you’re a prisoner like everybody else

“The Prisoner”, The Saints, from “Prehistoric Sounds”, 1979.

And here’s another:

Until you take your shoes
And go outside. stride over stride,
Walk to that tide because
The door is open wide.
Stride over stride
Walk to that tide.
Bye, Bye Pride.

“Bye Bye Pride”, The Go-Betweens, from “Tallulah”, 1987

There’s lots of others, but thats what this train of thought brings to mind. Fascinates me how just a line or two from a song sticks in your mind and makes that song stand out from the run of the mill.

    For me currently it’s
If you wrote me off, I’d understand it
‘Cos I’ve been on some other planet
So come pick me up, I’ve landed

in Landed by Bend Folds. You’re right though - it’s usually just a few lines that make me go “woah!”

Do you have any idea what was going on in Rivett yesterday? I picked my car up from the guy who was servicing it right near rivett primary at about 12:30 and I think I missed out on all the “fun”.

I, I love the colourful clothes she wears,
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair.
I hear the sound of a gentle word,
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air.

    (Beach Boys, Good Vibrations)

If that’s not one of the best falling in love lyrics around, I’ll eat my hat. Or maybe it’s this:

For you, there might be a brighter star,
But through my eyes, the light of you is all I see.
For you, there might be another song,
But all my heart can hear is your melody.

    (Stevie Wonder, Another Star)

There’s something about romance in lyrics that just does it for me. You should, if you haven’t already, check out the Tiddas recording of “For a Short Time” - on the “Lethal By The Kilo” record. It’s unreal.

Yes, I’ve heard the Tiddas version. I prefer the Weddings’ version though. On the live CD, it has the Tiddas women as guests.
