Doing your civic duty
Evidence in a Sydney gang rape case today included the fact that one of the accused men had been identified by the victim by three lumps on his penis. The prosecutor indicated that the jury would be shown photos of both of the accused men’s genitals.
Ewww … just what you need to encourage you to do jury duty - getting to see pictures of some low-life’s dick.
Its been ages since I’ve been called for jury duty and its only been once in my life. I had to turn up weekly for 4 weeks. Didn’t get selected (*) in the draw for any of the cases the first 3 weeks, found myself a (reasonably) legitimate excuse to get out of turning up the last week. Lucky for the accused that I didn’t get picked. The first case was some middle aged guy accused of molesting a young girl. Immediately I saw him, and before the charges were read out, I had him tagged as a stereotypical pedophile. So much for having an open mind. But I was right as he was found guilty. Can’t remember what the other cases I missed out on were.
(*) No, I wasn’t wearing a tee shirt with a racist/sexist/pedophilist/something-else-ist slogan to discourage the impression of impartiality, but a suit, even used to wear ties back then.
