Iraq - everything’s under control
Stay the course, our government wants Australia to do. What exactly is that course? Who knows what the plan actually is, what the victory conditions are? What exactly are all those soldiers and civilians dying for? Does anyone actually have the answer to this question? Dying for a noble cause is one thing, dying in a confused shambles something else (although I suppose either way you’re still dead at the end of the day). So George Bush, what is the plan to win in Iraq (I’d ask the same question of John Howard, but whats the point, he’ll just parrot George’s answer)?
In other Iraq news today, British forces blew up a police headquarters in Basra, and killed 7 gunmen in a raid to free prisoners of the renegade police, who it was believed had been infiltrated by Shi’ite militia. British spokesman Captain Tane Dunlop said the police unit had been taking the law into its own hands, saying:
“Crimes unit? That’s prettymuch what it does, rather than prevent,”
(Thats a statement true at various times of different parts of the police in several Australian states, but I’ll leave that alone for now.)
Isn’t Basra supposed to be sort of like the jewel for the coalition in Iraq, its success story, where British forces are readying to withdraw and hand control fully over to the Iraqis? Looks to me like there’s much work still to be done!

It just gets worse. I wish I could say, who cares?

Have you had any Muslim attacks in Australia? I appreciate Australia aiding us in this war, but I think if you had flaming Aussies holding hands as they jumped from their office building, you might feel more dedicated to cause.
The death toll will continue to mount until the war is won. It is a terrible reality of war.
However, the consequences of not going to war would result in far more deaths. It is a grim numbers game, but one we are forced to play.

What purpose does the war now serve, other than feeding new fanatics into the system? None that I can think of.

Marie - the 9/11 attacks were horrific, and destroying the perpetrators of them is a worthy cause. Unfortunately, the war in Iraq is questionable in its connection with 9/11. Afghanistan, destroying the Taliban and Al Quaeda in that country, good objectives. Should have pursued those to conclusion rather than go into Iraq. Even though the removal of Saddam from power was a worthwhile aim, the aftermath just seems to have no clear aims, and people are dying for what?

Unfortunately, ‘work still to be done’ equates with staying in Iraq. I could wear that if they would just start getting more creative about how to go about letting the Iraqis get on with running their own country and plan and make known a definite exit strategy.
I totally agree with your comment, too. The genious (such as it exists) of the current Bush administration is in its power to manipulate information. There’s a whole lot of people convinced that the US is in Iraq fighting the “war on terrorism” and conveniently forgetting that Iraq was not responsible for 9/11, not connected with it at all.
I wish sometimes that people would remember that just because someone is feeding you lies doesn’t mean you have to swallow them.
Incidentally marie, the attacks were TERRORIST attacks, not MUSLIM attacks. There are a lot of Muslims in this world just as horrified by terrorism as you are. I know, I work with some of them. Associated terrorism with all Muslims in that way just creates more hatred, and against a lot of people who don’t deserve it.
