Are we there yet?

Finally, we’re almost at the end of the cricket World Cup in the West Indies, and the final that has seemed to be coming for a few weeks now, is on tomorrow night - Australia vs Sri Lanka. These two have been the obvious form teams through the seemingly interminable weeks of the competition so far.

Once again, Australia cruelly exposed South Africa’s mental fragility in the big time …the Proteas seem to do well, except when it really counts. Thus, the semifinal was basically over in the first 10 overs when Australia had South Africa 5-27. In the words of former South African player, Adam Bacher:

“It was boys against men,”

“They taught us a cricket lesson.”

Sure did!

Now for Sri Lanka. I think Australia will beat them, and by a fair margin, the way we’ve dominated all comers at the World Cup. Sri Lanka needs everything to go right to have a chance of winning …they must play out of their skins and Australia be off its game.

As for the World Cup as a whole, hasn’t it gone on forever? I just haven’t been able to get very interested. The obvious finalists emerged weeks ago and most matches have been fairly one-sided. The only points of interest were a couple of wins each by Ireland and Bangladesh, everything else has been a bit of a yawn.

And of course, the whole competition was overshadowed by the murder of Pakistan coach, Bob Woolmer, after Pakistan were knocked out. How long before that crime gets solved, I wonder?

  1. One Response to “Are we there yet?”

  2. Forgotten about Woolmer murder. It was so long ago. Was that World Cup too?
