No raggers here

Going by the rantings of some of those opposed to the building of an Islamic school at Camden, on the outskirts of Sydney, it would seem many of the racist bogans who so enjoyed their day at the beach a couple of years ago, at Cronulla, have now taken up the country lifestyle.   There have been a number of protests about the college, which is currently being considered for planning approval by the local council.  This past week, a meeting attracted something like 900 people, of whom a couple of hundred couldn’t fit into the venue.

Some of the locals had this to say:

MALE PROTESTER: If it does get approved, every ragger that walks up the street’s going to get smashed up the arse by about 30 Aussies.
SECOND MALE PROTESTER: That’s it!
THIRD MALE PROTESTER: Country town, that’s our culture.
PROTESTER: What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, mate.

Country town culture?  By that I take it they look forward to getting pissed, doing burnouts down the main street, bashing a few aborigines, a spot of gay bashing perhaps,  maybe some sheep shagging?  Thats about what I’d expect judging from the rantings of some of the local lads.

And then we had this:

FEMALE PROTESTER: Oh no, it’s in a rural area that’s surrounded by farmland. It’s not an appropriate place for a school. There’s no development there that warrants a school.

OK, so there goes the likes of Yanco Agricultural College and other large schools in the country … near towns that aren’t big enough to support them.  I’m assuming that the anti-school people in the community also want the various Catholic, Anglican and any other religion based schools closed down in their town.  After all, surely its an objection to religious organisations indoctrinating kids thats driving the concerns.  Surely nothing to do with the brown skinned folk likely to send their children to the school and quite likely move into the Camden area themselves?

A couple of weeks ago, some brainiacs voiced their opposition to the school by impaling two pigs heads on stakes at the proposed site and draping them with an Australian flag.  One thing racist bogans do well is debate their points intelligently and coherently.

This week’s meeting was organised by a group called the Committee for Public Affairs Education, which Fred Nile’s Christian Democratic Party seems to be behind.  I haven’t heard much from Fred lately, and I suppose a bit of Muslim bashing is a change from his usual interests related to sex and morals.  Mr Nile was the keynote speaker at the meeting and  told the crowd he opposed the school because Islam opposed Christianity. Mr Nile and one of the meeting organisers, Colin Broadbridge, a CDP member who lives in Campbelltown, denied that the party had staged the meeting.  But the state MP Charlie Lynn, who was also invited to speak, said he had been approached two weeks ago by the CDP and asked to attend. He said Max Cracknell, a CDP Camden branch member, had been the main meeting organiser.  Mr Broadbridge said:

“We are a loose coalition of people; we are people who are prepared to go one step further rather than just carp about something.”

Sure, more like the local chapter of the KKK.

Now there are fears of further Cronulla-like riots over the issue.  Apparently the police are investigating a number of text messages being sent around which supposedly incite violence against moslems.  I guarantee that if anything does happen, we’ll get to see many of the racist bogan dickheads who were at Cronulla, back for round 2.

To those who don’t want the moslems in their community, sure there are some bad ones, but there are also plenty of bad white christians as well.  The vast majority of moslems are good people.

Finally, on a personal note, I went to school in Camden for a while, and my parents worked in the town.  It was a nice place back then.  I’d be disturbed to see that the town has actually turned into redneck bogan-ville.  I hope it isn’t and the views expressed by (admittedly a reasonable number at the protest meeting and at other times I’ve seen this issue covered in the media) some are not the views of the majority.  One challenge for the new Federal government is to wind back the unpleasant and offensive racism which gained a stronger foothold in Australian public life under the Howard government which actively courted racist sentiments, than had been noticeable prior to the last 6 years or so.   Things like Tampa and Cronulla do not paint Australia well in the eyes of the world, and the attitudes behind them need to be renounced and actively discouraged.

The science of whaling

What exactly is the science that Japan is trying to achieve with its “scientific whaling” program?  Apart from does whale taste better with soy sauce, wasabi or some other condiments, or is it better raw or cooked, and if cooked, whats better, grilled, fried, boiled or baked?  Perhaps their scientists are trying to work out which species of whale tastes best?

Japan has decided to pull the pin on killing humpback whales, but will still catch 1,000 whales in its annual research program.

Whaling / AFP

Australia led 31 countries in protesting to Japan about their whaling activities.  Japan said its decision not to catch humpbacks for “one year or two” came after consultation with the International Whaling Commission (IWC), although it noted the strength of the Australian opposition to the annual hunt.

Unfortunately it seems Japan is only stalling for time.  Translated cabinet documents showed the same meeting that granted the reprieve also reaffirmed Japan’s intention to push the IWC to allow the resumption of commercial whaling, according to Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO Steve Shallhorn.  Maybe not the most unbiased source, but I did hear on the radio today a Japanese government spokesman comment about something to the effect  of seeking reforms to the IWC.  (For that read … Japan will increase its efforts to stack the IWC by promising aid and other financial support to various shithole countries in Africa and the Pacific which probably could hardly recognise a whale if it turned up in their waters).

Japan says whaling is a cherished cultural tradition.  In many countries, cannibalism and headhunting were once cherished cultural traditions …. doesn’t mean they are acceptable today.

Also, I wonder if the scientific folk in Japan eat the other animals used in their scientific research?  Rats, mice, monkeys, dogs, yummy!

Smartchoices

I think its a smart decision by the Federal Opposition to drop its Workchoices policy.   I’d say the Liberals wish they’d never thought of it, let alone implemented it in such a shambolic way.  The smartest thing for them to have done as an Opposition is let the new government get rid of it, then never speak of it again …. and try to pretend it never existed.

To fight the government in abolishing Workchoices would have served only to prolong the agony, and given the government an excuse (as if they need one) to keep beating the opposition over the head with  the clearly  electorally damaging policy.

Having said that, it will be interesting to see how far the government winds the workplace relations system back.  I’d hate to see the old unfair dismissal rules back in their old form …. when obviously dickhead employees could either get reinstated or get compensation because of some deficiency in paperwork or something.  In unfair dismissal cases, surely the rules have to be along the lines of what would a reasonable employer do in this situation with this employee.

Right again ….. almost!

Having confidently predicted that Pamela Anderson’s latest marriage, to Rick Salomon, would be lucky to make it into 2008 -  they were married only in October, I thought my prediction was going to be right again when I read this morning that Pam had filed for divorce.

However, things can’t be quite as bad for Pam as she thought.  They seem to have gotten back together and are trying to “work things out“.

Oh well, its only a matter of time till her lawyers hit the print button and recycle those divorce papers.

Housekeeping

I’ve been fiddling around with this new blog, adding a header image, playing around with sidebars, widgets etc, and I’m quite happy with it now.  All ready to get back into regular blogging activity ….assuming work lets up a bit (I’ve been working like a dog this last week, finished after 1 am last night).

Also, cleaned out the garage today, roughly 20 years of accumulated junk being despatched to a big rubbish skip to be taken away on Monday.  We now have room in the garage …. to store some of the stuff thats accumulated in the house because we didn’t have room in the garage.

Finally, thanks to Snoskred, who’s hosting my blog and helped me with the WordPress setup.  I’m beginning to get the hang  of WordPress, having been exclusively a Blogger user up to now.

Time for a change

I’ve decided its time to make a change, so I’m now in the process of moving my blog from Blogger to WordPress on my own domain.

I’ll have a new address in a few days time, but the witty, rivetting, fascinating, inspiring, insightful, etc comment (ok, its all really a load of self-indulgent crap) will still be available for all to read.

Half right

Surprise, surprise! Another American gun massacre. I know, only 8 killed, so this one is only a minor blip, hardly even worth noticing for those that value gun rights above the rights of other citizens to live in a society that is not riddled with high powered weaponry available to each and every nutcase with a grudge against someone or something.

Robert Hawkins is the latest nutjob who’s taken out his woes with the world via his gun.

According to his landlady, with whom he left a suicide note:

“He said he was a piece of shit all his life and now he’ll be famous.”

Only half right there, Robert. Yes you are/were a piece of shit, but you won’t be famous.

A few days off

The wife and I have been in Sydney for a few days, catching up with friends and doing a bit of the tourist thing. The good thing was that a fair chunk of it was free, woo hoo, part of the booty from my wife’s achievement earlier in the year being a few nights free stay at a nice hotel in Darling Harbour.

Beats working!

The kids also appreciated being abandoned at home for a few days. They want us to go away more!
