May the NRA follow him

Charlton Heston died yesterday. I wish no disrespect to him or his family but he was an advocate for a cause I find deeply offensive. So, may the National Rifle Association die with him, and with it the indecently powerful gun lobby in America and the gun culture there.

  3. Surely you don’t disagree with this gentle man’s perfectly reasonable belief that we should all go round armed to the teeth with high powered weapons to kill anyone we happen to take a dislike to?

Heavens! Some mornings I could cheerfully mow down every man I see in a brightly coloured tie. And what about those people who wear football scarves? I would be doing the world a favour by blasting them with my assault rifle. Charlton only wanted to make this possible for me

  6. Cato - the 2nd amendment is fine, its the crazy interpretation of an 18th century document, which may have been applicable then, to justify the continued arming of American society. The relevance of the 2nd amendment probably ceased to have any real justification 100 years or so ago. But the gun nuts have seized on it to justify the unjustifiable.

  7. Good bye. Good riddance. Couldn’t agree more about your sentiments. Ugly man in all that he stood for later in life.

  8. Ah, so the 2nd amendment is outdated. How about the 1st amendment, then? No free speech for you! No religious liberty for you! How about the 19th amendment– no more right to vote for women!

No, in the real world, the “relevance” of the 2nd amendment is just as meaningful now as it was back then. Men and governments are not less tyrannical.

  9. Cato - free speech is absolutely fine … doesn’t hurt other people. Guns do (or more particularly idiots with guns do). Religious liberty is fine too, although seeing that polygamous sect on TV tonight makes me think there are plenty of people around who need protecting from some of the religious nutjobs going around.

As for men and governments being tyrannical, that seems to be a uniquely American view of their world, which I don’t believe is shared by people in other western democracies.
