I was pleased today to get the CD I’d ordered a week or so ago. Its by one of my favourite bands of the early 80′s – ie when I was at uni and seeing bands a lot, The Numbers. They were always worth seeing, especially given the fantastic singer and bass player they had. Bet you can guess who that was.

I love this sort of music – power-pop is my favourite genre, hence why bands like The Numbers, Sunnyboys, The Riptides, Spy vs Spy and the like were great to see and listen to. And I still like it, even now The New Pornographers are probably my favourite current band – and yay, I have tickets to see them in Sydney in October.

This music I think stands the test of time. Sometimes the musicians don’t (witness The Rolling Stones for example), but I found this article about The Numbers when the new CD was released, and this picture of Annalisse Morrow shows she’s aged quite well, considering its getting on for 30 years since the photo on the CD cover would have been taken.

Annalisse Morrow … still a shy young woman at heart.

OK, I’ve listened to the CD in full twice now, plus a few random songs. Excellent!!!

The patented Todd McKenney pants down defence

After being arrested for possession of the drug, GBH/GHB/fantasy, Todd McKenney (musical theatre actor, and “Dancing With the Stars” judge), told police that he had been at a party, and had danced so much and got too hot, so he took his pants off to cool down so he could continue dancing. While his pants were down, he claims someone else at the party must have put the drug in his pocket.

McKenney was arrested after being found unconscious in a park, and had to be revived by ambulance officers. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge of drug possession. Since his arrest was revealed in April the entertainer and FM radio host, has publicly defended himself, saying that he had been the victim of drink spiking and “tall poppy syndrome” envy by someone who wanted to bring him down.

Everyone repeat after me, Todd, sure we believe you!!!!

Now I’m thinking such a creative defence lends itself to many situations. Lets see:

  • homework not done – Sir, I got so hot riding to school I took my pants off to cool down, and my homework was in the pocket and must have got stolen
  • missing deadlines at work – Boss, the preso was on my USB key, in my pocket, but it was so hot on the train I took my pants off to cool down, and when I got to the station I must have grabbed someone else’s pants and put them on by mistake
  • speeding fines – Officer, I don’t know why I’ve got this ticket. I wasn’t there that day. I can explain what happened, my license was in my pants ……..

Iron Man

My son talked me into going to see “Iron Man” tonight. I’d seen the ads for it when I was in Taiwan and Hong Kong a week and a bit ago and thought it looked interesting (of course, I didn’t understand the ads in Chinese). So “cheapskate Tuesday” at the local cinema was enough to convince me it would be worth spending $9.50 on.

ironman

And it was well worthwhile, much better than I’d expected. I haven’t really been much of a fan of comic book adaptation movies (like Spiderman, Batman, the Hulk) but this one was pretty good ….I’d never heard of the Iron Man comics before, so it was all new to me.

Sure it was far fetched, but it did have an interesting premise, and the story was well told. Robert Downey Jr was excellent as the main character, Tony Stark, and Jeff Bridges made a good bad guy (I didn’t even realise it was him until the credits at the end). Gwyneth Paltrow did a decent job also.

Next thing we’re going to is in a couple of weeks …. The Chaser’s live show. Kids talked me into that as well. That should be good … Cellobella saw it last month in Perth and enjoyed it.

Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!

DigLazarusDig

Time for some musical goodness. I’ve been listening to the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds CD “Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!” since yesterday ….I think I’ve listened to it completely at least 4 times. I’m impressed – while I’ve enjoyed the last few of the band’s CD’s such as “No More Shall We Part”, “Nocturama” and “Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus”, this one is more straightforward and rock-ish.

My favourite song: “Albert Goes West”.

Here is a video for the title track. Enjoy!

Breaking the internet

I really liked this photo when I first saw it a few days ago.  Lindsay Lohan did a photo shoot for New York magazine which was a re-creation of Marilyn Monroe’s last nude photo shoot.  It was even done by the same photographer who took the photos of Monroe – Bert Stern.

lohan_monroe

The images were so popular on the internet that the magazine’s website crashed after receiving around 20 million daily page views in the days after they were published. The average number of daily page views in January was 1.2 million.

While the cover photo above is really good, and some of the others (I was only looking at the magazine’s site for the articles, honest!) are too, it doesn’t alter the fact that Lindsay Lohan is a fairly mediocre actress who has gained more fame and notoriety for her out of control personal life than she’s ever likely to get for acting.

Still, I’m happy to post the photo here – (a) because I like it, (b) because I know it will be a traffic magnet.

Cloverfield

We saw “Cloverfield” last night.   I liked it – even if I felt queasy in the stomach almost all the way through it.  And thats nothing to do with gore or violence or anything like that.  The gimmick of this movie is that its shot to look like a home movie shot on a home video camera.  The jerkiness and sudden cuts between scenes take some getting used to, and it feels like a bit of a rollercoaster ride.

Well worth seeing.
